The Maple Play Balance Board: Built Different, on Purpose

A look at how every Maple Play balance board is made.

Every balance board we make starts the same way, with a choice. A choice to do it right, even when shortcuts exist.

We recently shared on our Instagram account a behind the scenes look at how our balance boards are made, and the response was wonderful. So many of you asked questions, shared it with friends, and told us you had no idea how much goes into each one. That means everything to us. So let's walk through it, step by step.

It starts with the right material.

We hand select our plywood sheets before a single cut is made. Not all plywood is the same, the grain, the density, the consistency of the layers all matter. Our boards are 40% lighter than comparable products on the market, which means kids can move them around easily, and parents don't have to worry about little feet struggling with something too heavy. Light doesn't mean fragile. It means we chose better.

Then comes the cut.

Each board is shaped on our CNC machine using our own original design. CNC cutting means every single board comes out the same, no variation, no guesswork. Consistency is quality.

Smooth edges, every time.

We route every edge by hand. This step is all about feel, when a child runs their hands along the board, we want it to feel like it was made just for them. No sharp corners, no rough patches. Just clean, refined edges that are safe and beautiful.

Three rounds of sanding.

Yes, three. Each board goes through a 3-step sanding process, getting progressively smoother with each pass. It's a detail most people would never think to ask about, but you can feel the difference the moment you touch one.

Sealed for real life.

Kids get messy. That's why every board is sealed before it leaves our hands. The seal protects the wood, makes it easy to wipe clean, and means your board will look great for years, not just the first few weeks.

Ready to go home.

When a board is finished, it gets packed with care. No rushing, no corners cut at the last step. It goes out the door the same way it was made, with intention.

We don't make balance boards to check a box. We make them because we believe kids deserve toys that are built to last, safe to use, and genuinely fun. Every step in this process is a small act of care, and we hope you feel that when it arrives at your door.
